When Duty Calls, Make Sure to Answer

Election Day | Tuesday, November 5th | 6am - 9pm

 

Have you moved lately?  Turned 18?  Never voted before?  It’s time to register to vote! 

The general election will be held on November 5th.  Polls are open from 6am - 9pm.

Voter registration forms must be postmarked no later than October 11th and received by the board of elections not later than October 16th to be eligible to vote in the General Election.  You may register in person at the board of elections by October 11th except  if you have been honorably discharged from the military or have become a naturalized citizen since October 11th  you may register in person at the board of elections up until October 25th.

Requests for an absentee ballot must be postmarked by Oct. 29 and the completed ballot must be postmarked by November 4th.

The Green Fair

September 28 | 9am - 2pm

The City of Troy spends over $1.2 Million every year for space in landfills for the garbage we all throw away, but much of what we throw away can be recycled! Any plastic with a recycling symbol on it, cardboard, paperboard, paper, tin, glass, and much more can be put into the single stream recycling system. But what do you do with those odd other things?

The Second Annual TRIP & RCHR Green Fair aims to provide a place. Bring any of these items and we will make sure they get recycled properly:

• Electronic Waste, including batteries, air conditioners, appliances, light bulbs, tools, smoke detectors, cell phones, radios, and pretty much anything else that uses electricity
• Bikes/Bike Parts (donated to the Troy Bike Rescue)
• Books (Donated to a local organization)
• Paper (Shredded off-site and used for insulation by GreenFiber)
• Clothing & Textiles (Recycled by St. Pauly Textile)
• Food Scraps (Composted by EmpireZero Waste)
• Metal

Plus, there will be lots of great learning opportunities, products and services offered by local businesses and organizations working to help us all live more sustainably.

Attention All Homeowners!

In order to keep your STAR tax exemption, you must register with the NYS Tax Department. This results from legislation that was recently passed to prohibit homeowners from “doubledipping;” that is, claiming a STAR exemption on a house that is not a primary residence.

Faces at TRIP: Eric Newton

Meet Eric Newton – a Junior at SUNY Oswego, majoring in Journalism.  Eric is interning this summer at TRIP on a volunteer basis, organizing TRIP’s second annual Green Fair next month.  In addition to his TRIP responsibilities, Eric caters for Lily and the Rose and works at Fifty South Restaurant.  When Eric isn’t working he enjoys rowing at Fish Creek, kayaking and hiking.  Eric says he likes the work environment at TRIP and the opportunity to work with various green groups.

TRIP and RCHR are hosting the 2nd Annual Troy Green Fair in partnership with the City of Troy, Rensselaer County, and Transition Troy. It's Free and the public is invited.

Come recycle your stuff to save it from the landfills. (see list below)  Learn about ways to be greener and meet businesses and organizations that have sustainable and green products, services, or information to share.

Small City Revitalization

Second Annual 

New York State Neighborhood Revitalization Conference

Last September a group of local residents launched the first Annual New York State Neighborhood Revitalization Conference.  Held on a weekend at Russell Sage College, a keynote talk by author James Kunstler launched us into a day of lively interaction and discussion with workshop topics including vacant properties, land banking, green rehab, solar energy, and green infrastructure.

This year on Saturday, September 21, the second conference will be held at Russell Sage College. This year, the keynote speaker will be Vincent DeSantis whose book, “Toward Civic Integrity, Re-establishing the Micropolis,” grows out of the history of Gloversville and Johnstown and his reflections on small city revitalization. Workshops now scheduled include such topics as empty churches, Habitat for Humanity, youth court, Maker’s Space, and the Mohawk Harvest Co-Op.
