Patti Egan: Volunteer

Patti Egan is TRIP’s newest volunteer.   Patti noticed a request for volunteers at TRIP in a Troy Record article a few months back and reached out to see how she could help.  And she has been a great help to us!

Patti has over 25 years of experience working in the banking industry, but has recently become unemployed.  While looking for work, she wanted to be a part of the community and volunteer to keep up her skill level and give back.  In the past she volunteered for the American Red Cross and the Rensselaer County Literacy Group.  Her volunteer experiences were very positive so she was delighted that TRIP had a spot for her in their Rental Management unit.

Patti’s skillset centers around her desire to keep offices running smoothly.  She enjoys all of the administrative and managerial tasks in an office environment and has experience conducting intake interviews for loan applicants and foreclosure prevention.   At TRIP, she is in charge of migrating building information files into electronic format, specific to certain cataloging criteria.  TRIP managers are pleased to find how efficient, timely, and capable she is, competently and independently completing the day’s work.

Outside of working and running an office, Patti loves gardening, reading, bowling- and has a new found interest in photography.  She is a lifelong resident of Troy and hopes to find a full time, permanent  administrative position in the near future.  If you think Patti might be a fit for your organization, please email her here.  

Childhood Lead Primary Prevention Program

Childhood Lead Poisoning is a major problem resulting in the loss of billions of dollars every year.  Rensselaer County Health Department in conjunction with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County have joined forces to reduce childhood lead poisoning.

The Rensselaer County Childhood Lead Primary Prevention Program (CLPPP) seeks to   educate residents, property owners, and/or contractors regarding lead based paint hazards.  Education includes lead recalls, proper nutrition, how lead affects the body, the dangers it poses to the population, especially children and pregnant women, identification of lead hazards, how to use Lead Safe Work Practices to handle lead based paint hazards, and how to maintain lead safe housing by being proactive.

The CLPPP provides free in home lead risk assessments to residents living in the 12180 and the 12182 zip codes due to the high incidences of elevated blood lead levels and due to the older housing stock located within these target areas.  Free educational materials and supplies are provided along with remediation assistance to those households that qualify.  Free Renovation, Repair and Painting training courses are provided through the program.

This program is a primary prevention program and hopes to reduce the incidences of elevated blood lead levels through dissemination of education, performing lead risk assessments and promoting childhood lead testing.

Take a Sip for TRIP is a huge success!

TRIP’s inaugural “Take a Sip for TRIP” event was a great success.  More than 150 people turned out to taste nine New York State beers and six varieties of wine on Tuesday, May 21^st at the Hilton Garden Inn in Troy.  Molly Durnin entertained the crowd with live music. There was also a raffle and wine pull.  Plans are already underway for the event in 2014.

We could not have done this without the support of many partners, including sponsors, planners, raffle prize donors, beverage companies and wineries.  Thanks to all the following:

TRIP has two full-time one-year VISTA positions available starting August 2013. The Americorps*VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) program provides compensation of approximately $10,000, health insurance and an end-of-term award for education ($4,725) or cash ($1,200). 14th Annual Hidden Garden Tour

The 14th Annual Hidden Garden Tour, organized by the Friends of Prospect Park, will be held, rain or shine, 4 to 7 pm, Thursday, May 23, 2013. Parking and check-in is at the Russell Sage parking lot at the corner of First and Division Streets in downtown Troy. Admission for this self-guided Tour is $10, and maps of the participating gardens are available at the check-in table. All proceeds from the Tour benefit ongoing projects in Prospect Park.
